Food Therapy 6
– Si Shen Tang or Four Spirits Soup
(This article is a continuation of the topic on weight loss from a few weeks ago but as it is an integral part of the Food therapy series, I have title it Food Therapy 6 for easier viewing)
Early on when I first started to talk about TCM and food therapy, some of my regulars expressed a lot of interest in learning about the benefits that food therapy combined with TCM theory has on weight loss and I devoted one of my previous episodes talking about it.
Today is a continuation of that topic but this time I would like to introduce some fairly delicious and simple to prepare recipes for weight management through the lens of TCM.
Just to recap what we already know; obesity and weight gain from a western medicine perspective is the accumulation of fatty tissue that may be due to illness, lifestyle and diet. When we think of weight gain, one of the first factors we blame tend to be how a person has a sedentary lifestyle and doesn’t like to exercise or they eat too much junk foods. While these are some of the commonly known causes of weight gain, they are not the sole culprit.
Someone may be suffering from an underlying disease that affects their ability to move or causes changes in there hormones which may cause them to easily put on weight such as PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome. Another cause may be taking medication that causes weight gain such as prednisone for lupus.
And from a TCM perspective we discussed about the accumulation of phlegm-damp in the body caused by harm to the spleen which impairs the transformation and transportation of Qi around the body and we also talked about the 4 main patterns for phlegm-damp which are
From a general perspective, the main culprit is usually impairment with Spleen function either directly or indirectly such as Liver Qi stagnation and invade the Spleen and you would find that most herbal formulas that aim to combat weight gain uses herbs that act on the Spleen by tonifying it and also invigoration the flow of Qi as well as resolve dampness in the body. In terms of food therapy the idea is the same, if there is excess internal phlegm damp then we can fight it by using ingredients that promote the movement of fluids and dampness as well as tonify spleen and kidney. In this episode I want to introduce a soup that does just that.
Let’s start off with a savoury dish this time.
Si Shen Tang – Four Spirits Soup
Si Shen Tang is a soup that is easy to prepare and is suitable for most people in any season and it is used for boosting energy, improve digestion, mental clarity, strengthens the spleen and fortifies the Lungs and most importantly eliminates dampness.
The name of the soup has 2 meanings. First it is named after the 4 herb ingredients which are Fox nuts (Qian Shi), Lotus seeds (Lian Zhi), Chinese yam (San Yao) and Poria Cocos (Fu Ling) and secondly it also has the function of calming the spirit or the Shen.
In TCM there are 5 facets of Shen which are the Shen, Hun, Po, Yi and Zhi. Each of these facets are also tied to a specific organ. Heart – Shen, Liver – Hun, Lung – Po, Spleen – Yi and finally Kidney – Zhi and as with the 5 element theory when there is excess or deficiency with an organ channel then it will also affect these 5 facets of Shen. In regards to our topic for dampness induced weight gain we would chose ingredients that focus on the Spleen and Kidney.
If the spleen and kidney is impaired then our Yi意 and Zhi志 will also be impaired and as such the herbs in this soup will help brighten our mind and benefit the spirit.
Let us move on and break down the 4 ingredients
Fox nut, Qian Shi, flavour is sweet, astringent and neutral, and is associated with the spleen and kidney channels. Its main functions are to tonify the spleen and stop diarrhea, to strengthen the kidneys and control the Essence (Jing); and to dispel dampness.
Lotus seeds, Lian Zhi, is sweet, astringent, neutral and enters the spleen, kidney and heart. It tonifies spleen to stop diarrhea, tonify kidney and secure essence, stop leukorrhagia, nourish heart and induce tranquilization. Lotus seed and fox nut is a common pairing used in soups as they have similar properties.
Chinese yam, Shan Yao, is sweet and enters the Spleen, Lung and Kidneys and is used for reducing poor appetite, fatigue or diarrhea due to spleen deficiency and coughs due to lung deficiency. It has been used in cases of seminal emission, frequent urination or thick vaginal discharge. It is also beneficial for diabetes, menstrual and digestive cramps, rheumatoid arthritis, and pain from gallstones etc.
Poria Cocos ,Fu Ling, is sweet, bland and neutral. It enters the Heart, Spleen and Kidneys. It is often added as a mild diuretic, treats loss of memory, anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, tension, nervousness, dizziness, urination problems, fluid retention, insomnia and digestive issues such as diarrhoea.
As you can see the 4 ingredients complement each other in their affects and the focus on improving the Spleen and Kidney ability to transform and eliminate dampness. While this soup isn’t just for assisting in resolving dampness related weight gain but also works wonders for improving general well-being.
As always with food and cooking the recipe is highly flexible and serves as a basis for modifying it to your own taste. For example if you want to strengthen or nourish the Lungs, you can put in some Yu Zhu or Bai He. To improve resolving dampness you can add in some Yi Yi Ren or if you it to be more savoury then add some pork. Alternatively if you want something sweet and refreshing you can put in some rock sugar and serve cold as a sweet soup.
